2010 Manager's Letter

April 29, 2010
To All Our Valued Members,
It’s been a couple of years since my last club update letter. With the arrival of spring, and the busy summer season almost here, I thought I would bring you up to speed on happenings around the club. My staff and I understand that there are many different reasons why you choose to retain your membership, and it is my hope that we continue to deliver high quality service in everything we offer. Our nation’s economic situation has made it difficult for all, and the Gatling Pointe Yacht Club is no exception. During these hard economic times, we will continue to offer quality goods and services to our respected members.
Restaurant
In the past year, the Yacht Club has continued to offer quality food at reasonable prices. Calvin Ruffin, our Food and Beverage Manager, has maintained a safe and healthy environment to provide a service that keeps our membership satisfied. Calvin, who is entering his 12th year as an employee of Gatling Pointe Yacht Club continues to look for innovative ways to draw the interest of our members. Our delivery service has provided many of our members the luxury to order from home when they choose not to “dine in” with us. With the weather warming up, we are preparing a staff for the summer that will provide a great atmosphere, as well as top notch service you deserve. As in past seasons, our dining room will expand to the pool area to offer pool side service while you enjoy yourself with your friends and family.
Pool
Now that spring has sprung, we are underway in getting the pool ready for the summer season! Most of you know that from the Nor’easter this past November the pool area retained some major damage. We lost sections of the fence and the tidal surge undermined the pool decking causing settling and cracking. The constant tides from this Nor’easter were more destructive to the Yacht Club than Hurricane Isabel in 2003. The pool deck has already been repaired and the pool has been cleaned.  In the next few weeks, the shoreline will be re-established and the fencing replaced. We’re waiting for the pollen in the air to diminish before the lifeguard staff, led by our returning Head Guard Sarah Rogers, removes the pool cover and prepare for another safe summer season.
Marina
The Marina is ready for the upcoming boating season! The Marina was also affected hard by the Nor’easter in November. Although the main pier that was replaced after Hurricane Isabel was unharmed, the end of the pier was almost completely removed from the Nor’easter. Since then, that section has been repaired and water and electricity have been restored. At this time, I would like to thank the officers of the Boaters Club for offering yet another service to our members. If interested in joining the Boaters Club, please contact their Commodore Bruce Taylor. Recently, the Boaters Club had their annual cleanup day. They had the help they needed to get the marina ready for this summer. Some of the work that was done entailed replacing broken cleats, replacing deck boards, and building a new rack for our Optimist sailboats. We currently have a limited number of slips for sale and for rent. If interested, please contact me for details.

Tennis and Activities
As the weather warms up, so will our programming schedule. Mary Lancaster, our Activities Director since 1999, is in the process of getting our summer camp schedule together. Our camps will include something for kids of all ages, and offer a safe environment just blocks away from your home. For any information needed on any of our upcoming camps, you can check with Mary by responding to any of our weekly e-mails, by visiting our website www.gpyachtclub.com or registering online through Facebook. Our sailing program looks to build on the foundation that has been set for the past 10 years. Max Plarr, our Sailing Instructor, is returning for his second year of service. He had a successful first year with the program and cannot wait to get back into the water with the kids. Besides the children activities, we have many events to our adults as well. Besides all the normal parties for the whole family like Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day, we also hold functions for just adults. This year marks the return of one of the Club’s favorite, our Lip Sync and DJ Party. The party is set for June 19th at 8:00pm. We have some characters living in this neighborhood, and we are looking for some more! Find a song individually, or by group, and show us what you’ve got.
Our tennis courts have been opened for play. We have hung new windscreens and renovated our tennis ball machine.   If you would like to use the machine, please see me for details. And, if you’re looking for a game, there is a group of players that get together on Saturday mornings. If interested in playing please let me know and I will pass your name to the group.
Dues
As always, we strive to keep the dues as low as possible while providing you with the facility and services you deserve. We have found it necessary to increase the dues minimally in order to continue our elevated quality of service, programs, and improvements needed at the club.   This is only the tenth increase in dues since the opening of the Club in 1989. Beginning May 1, 2010 our dues will be as follows:

Family Membership: $85
See above for Marina Membership Information

Sincerely,

 Sean Gibbons
General Manager
